Aussie Millions 2008

One of the most respected events on the worldwide poker calendar is without doubt the annual Aussie Millions, which attracts hundreds of players from both the USA, Europe, and an assortment of other destinations. Star names aplenty were again in full force for the 2008 Melbourne Crowne Casino showpiece, along with a quintet of hopeful Online Qualifiers from Blue Square Poker; Charlie Combes, Richard Scott, Duncan Godfrey, Alan Mower, and Katharine Hartree.

All qualifiers were hosted by the irrepressible "Mad" Marty Wilson who cheered them on all week to a couple of notable results. Firstly Richard "Washman5" Scott won a special iPoker Qualifiers event, picking up over $2,100 and an impressive trophy for the mantlepiece.

Even more spectacular though was the run of Duncan "runadrum5" Godfrey in the Main Event. He was the only qualifier to get through to Day 1, but even he cannot have had high hopes returning with only 18,200 chips from his starting stack of 20,000. Not one to give up lightly though, Duncan battled through another day to kick off Day 3 still a short stack on 29,000 but having outlasted a good portion of the field.

The final stages of tournaments are where legends are made, and Duncan came into his own on Day 3 to earn the respect and support of the local crowd. Despite having to share a tv table with the likes of Phil Ivey and Joe Hachem he showed no fear in making moves against them and succeeded in building his stack right up to 500,000 by the end of the day with only 22 players remaining.

Unfortunately there was no fairy tale ending to the story as he succumbed with AK v QQ to finish in 19th place from a starting field of 780 earning a cool $65,000 AUD ($57,137 USD). A great achievement which has earned Duncan a lot of recognition both amongst the locals in Melbourne and his peers back home in the UK.
