2006 UK Horse Racing Betting Highlights
- In March, War of Attrition was hailed as a future horse racing star after winning the Vodafone Cheltenham Gold Cup by closely beating Hedgehunter, who later repeated his second place performance in the Grand National.
In other races on the same day at the Cheltenham Festival, horse racing betting fans had a good day with three other favourites winning. This was a marked turnaround from the previous day when none of the favourites came home first.
- The Grand National at Aintree in April was greatly anticipated, with Hedgehunter looking set to become the first back to back winner since Red Rum. However after the last fence Numbersixvalverde pulled ahead to win the main event in the horse racing betting calendar by six lengths.
The Grand National is the most famous horse race in the world, and as such attracts thousands of people who are otherwise uninterested in horse racing betting. It is also one of the toughest races - typically less than ten horses from a field of 40 will finish the race.
- June saw one of horse racing’s most sought-after prizes was won by Sir Percy, who snatched victory from Dragon Dancer in an exciting finish to the Vodafone Epsom Derby.
Dragon Dancer, a 66-1 chance, was only one of three horses within a neck of Sir Percy at the finishing post. It was considered by many horse racing betting fans to have been the most exciting race of 2006.
- Also in June, Royal Ascot returned to its Berkshire home and Ouija Board came out as the leading star, winning the festival’s highest-rated race, The Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
In the showpiece Golden Jubilee race, 33-1 shot Les Arcs hung on to win by a neck from 50-1 chance Balthazaar's Gift - a result which no doubt delighted a small number of horse racing betting fans who had backed the outsiders each-way.
